In Vedic myth one of the seven great Rishis and one of the Prajapatis. He was the author of several hymns in the Rig-Veda, and was victor in a contest with Viswamitra, a fellow Rishi. Vasishtha was the possessor of Nandi, the Snow-white Bull of Siva.
